Angela, You Are Welcome at this Shabbat
The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute rescinded the 2019 Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award from honoree Angela Davis because of her support for Palestinian freedom.
I designed this print as part of a campaign I organized of Shabbats held across the country to demonstrate unwavering Jewish solidarity with Davis and Palestine, which helped to challenge the media’s narrative of division and contribute to the pressure that ultimately led the Institute to reoffer her the award. In expressing gratitude for our action, Davis spoke to the history honored with the print:
’Angela, sister, you are welcome in this Shabbat’ comes from a slogan that was used on many posters all over the country when I was underground fleeing the FBI. People put up these posters on their doors: ‘Angela, sister, you are welcome in this house.’ And you have to realize that the only reason people are familiar with my name and my history today is because people did that work of organizing the movement to save my life.
